Myra Muir Trophy
Myra was a “supporter”. She supported her husband Alex, she supported her family,
two of whom were members of the club, and she supported Hamilton Operatic and
Dramatic Club. Alex was a playing member for many years and was President in 1966
and 1967. The club is affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association
(NODA) and Alex was the Region 5 representative for 17 years. This involved regular
visits to all the clubs in our area, not just to their shows but also to rehearsals.
Whenever Alex and Myra went too.
When Myra died Alex gave a silver salver to the club to be presented each year, in
show week, to the person considered the best “supporter”. It could be either a playing
member or someone working behind the scenes and was first presented in 1995.
This year, 2011, the winner of the Myra Muir trophy is Gordon Watson. Gordon works
tirelessly for the club in many ways. Due to the rising costs of producing a show, we are
required to fundraise, and during the summer, Gordon ran a silent auction and a raffle,
which raised in excess of £1500. He, as immediate past President, has also been a
great support to our current President, Emma, who acknowledged this in her speech on
the last night of “The Producers”.
