| Probably the best known story ever, but is it? |
This show puts a slightly different slant on things purporting to show the last few days in the life of Jesus through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples. Judas, becoming more and more disillusioned by the public perception of what Jesus is about, and by the way Jesus reacts to that perception, is tormented. Seeing Jesus as the saviour of his people he is aware that there are those, more fanatical than himself, who see Jesus as the warrior, the fighter who would set his people from the Roman oppression. Judas starts to fear that the political turmoil, caused in his eyes by Jesus' apparent naivety and the inconsistencies of his actions, for instance his relationship with Mary Magdelene a common harlet, will totally undermine the goals towards which they are all aimed at the start of their mission. Judas is also aware that the establishment, in the personage of Ciaphas the High Priest and his fellow priests are reacting, being extremely unhappy with the way the 'Jesus movement' is undermining their authority. As if things weren't bad enough the King Herod is less than happy but doesn't see Jesus as an immediate threat, leaving it to Pontius Pilot (the Roman Governor) to appease the Jewish authorities by eventually allowing the Crucifixion of Christ. Judas then comes to realise that in fact he was destined to be the instrument through which Jesus would be caught and killed. His inherent love for Jesus drives him to the point where his tortured mind overcomes his reason and Judas hangs himself. |
