42nd Street - the Story |
Julian Marsh, 'one of the greatest Directors on that glittering gulch - Broadway' is making a come back after the Wall Street Crash. His latest project, "Pretty Lady", is being totally financed by Abner Dillon on the condition that his lady friend, Doroth Brock, plays the leading role. Marsh's efforts are supported by two gifted writers, Maggie Jones and Bert Barrie, and he is confident that this will be his best ever show. Along with Maggie and Bert doing the character parts, Billy Lawlor has what is known as the Juvinile lead, a talented tenor and dancer and also renowned lady killer. He is immediately attracted to a naive young lady from Allantown PA called Peggy Sawyer coming to the big city for the first time to make her way onto the Broadway stage. She misses the first audition but is persuaded to demonstrate her talent to Billy and is spotted by Julian who puts her in the Line. Dorothy Brock's real love, Pat Denning, turns up threatening the Abner Dillon connection much to Julian's annoyance. |
